Home bakery registration checklist.

A practical checklist for UK home bakers covering food registration, permissions, hygiene, allergens, insurance and launch setup.

Register before you trade.

The Food Standards Agency says food businesses should register with the local authority at least 28 days before trading. That applies whether the business is run from commercial premises, a mobile setup or home.

  • Register with the local authority where the food business operates.
  • Be ready for environmental health contact or inspection.
  • Update the authority if the business model changes materially.
  • Do not treat informal social sales as separate from food business rules without checking.

Home permissions to check.

Food registration is not the only check. A home bakery may also need permissions because the work happens from a home address.

Planning

Ask whether visits, collections, signage, sheds or increased deliveries create a planning issue.

Landlord or mortgage

Check whether the property agreement allows business use.

Insurance

Check public liability, product liability, stock, equipment, customers visiting and whether home insurance excludes business use.

Tax

Check HMRC registration, records, trading allowance and self-assessment obligations.

Operational basics.

The strongest home bakery setup is boring in the right way: clear, recorded and repeatable.

  • Write down your cleaning, storage, cooling, allergen and delivery or collection process.
  • Use clear product names, ingredients and allergen information.
  • Control when customers can collect.
  • Keep order, payment and refund records.
  • Use business-only contact details and avoid publishing private details unnecessarily.

Where Membber fits.

Membber gives a home baker a simple customer-facing layer for joining, online ordering, payments, Wallet passes and repeat customer offers. It should sit alongside, not replace, the compliance checks above.
